ACOG statement against Homebirth

June 17, 2008 the AMA released a statement saying that their newest resolution 205 includes a resolve to "develop model legislation in support of the concept that the safest setting for labor, delivery, and the immediate postpartum period is in the hospital, or a birthing center within a hospital complex, that meets standards jointly outlined by the AAP and ACOG, or in a freestanding birth center that meets the standards of the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, The Joint Commission, or the American Association of Birth Centers."

This statement could potentially lead to legislature that could affect women's ability to have a full decision in where she gives birth. It could potentially affect our ability to choose to birth at home with a certified professional midwife or licensed midwife. Thank you so much to Claudette Coughenour, Fawn Gilbride, Laura Paoletti, Mary Ellen Escalante, and Gabrielle Menn, who were our participants. And a big thanks to Kellie Fuller of The Vine Radio for facilitating the discussion time.
